Of Witches and Warlocks

Halloween can be such a fun time, whether you are finding a cute costume for your kids or brainstorming a zany idea for an adult get-together. As much fun as all this can be, the costs to prepare and piece everything together can add up, leaving you later with a bad wig and some shoe covers you will never use again.

I put together some of these Halloween “looks”, that maybe you could pull together with pieces you already have in your closet or if you purchase would at least get use out of the rest of the year. Just add hair and makeup to create a more dramatic impact and you should be able to transition from Trick or Treating with the kids to a grown-up party.

A modern take on the wild west saloon girl. Think a feathered hair piece, lace tights and/ or gloves with boots and a fun western inspired dress.

Even though it’s not on this season, Mad Men is still a favourite of mine. I love the short ornate cocktail dresses paired with feminine accessories and a great pair of heels. All you need is red lips, nails and perfectly coiffed hair. Click here for a tutorial.

With all the long maxi dresses out this fall and the boho accessories, putting together a rambling gypsy look would be easy. You could even add feather extensions for more drama. For makeup, think dramatic cat eyes and bold nail colors.

The 80’s always seems to be a popular costume choice. I used the movie, “Hot Dog” as the inspiration for this outfit. Think neon colors, graphic-tees and furry boots. Since neon is supposed to be popular next spring, any bold accessories you purchase may serve you well when the weather warms up.

I know right! At least you don’t feel so bad about buying some pieces for Halloween. I was also thinking of any of the office parties during the day or kids school events where they promote “dressing up”, at least you aren’t walking back to the parking garage with a bad wig and a scary polyester suit on!

Mad Men is cute!! I’m not really a big Halloween fan, in fact I enjoy dressing up Tara more but then again it is an excuse to go shopping!!!

I know, for some reason I’m a sucker for a costume party. We’ve had the Griswold Christmas (Ugly Christmas Sweater Party), Cowboy parties, Pin-Up parties. Now I really want to have a Mad Men themed party for a house warming…

I know you posted this over a year ago, but I love love love the “saloon girl” outfit and it would be PERFECT for my western themed company holiday party next month. Any chance you have some more information on where to find those pieces? I realise the chances are slim a year on, but I’m up for the challenge!

Never mind! I dug through your archives and found the post! Wish me luck!!
