Spring Cleaning Simplified

As we come out of hibernation into spring my anxiety of all the chores and cleaning that needs to be done amplifies my mind clutter into a full out panic. As I stack up all the things I need, wait want to get completed it, I get so overwhelmed I don’t know where to start. So to organize myself into getting the list checked off I’ve gone searching for ways to simplify and organize my “mind clutter” into a to-do list for efficient spring cleaning.

Choose a 10 or 30 day challenge:

If you’re like me, I want to finish all my spring cleaning and to-do items in like a day, maybe 2 days tops. However unrealistic that is, it’s easier to break the tasks down by room and break it up into smaller pieces. That’s why a 10-30 day spring cleaning challenge might work for you.

The Basics vs the Extras:

Too often I mix my basic cleaning requirements with my spring “want” list such as adding new plants to the house or repainting and organizing the pantry… So I love the idea of having a list that separates the needs versus the nice to have items.

Spring Cleaning Also Applies to Your Office and Electronics

I often say that my home is separate from my office. Admittedly I’m a piler not a filer and the paper can stack up very quickly in my office. However I think to simplify and declutter your work space can be just as important as spring cleaning your home. So I would also add a digital spring cleaning to the list. Things to tackle in your office include:

-File and then shred any papers that no longer hold use or are outdated. A good rule of thumb on timelines for keeping files are here.

-Cleanup your desktop, tablet and phone. File random docs/pictures etc that are at random, also review any apps and delete if you find they are not being used.

-Organize your photos, music and cleanup your voicemail. Make sure you backup anything important on a portable hard drive or cloud based storage system.

I’m about halfway through my spring clean and can already tell I’m feeling way more organized and refreshed for the summer ahead!
