Tips for Stress- Free Entertaining

With summertime comes an increase in bridal, baby showers and social get together’s in general. As much as I love hosting a party, I used to get overwhelmed to the point of just plain stressed out about hosting. This unfortunately would lead to not being able to relax and enjoy the event, resonating my tone to guests. So, not wanting to give up on entertaining, I started honing my skills so I could actually relax and enjoy the time with my guests. Here are my top tips for less stress entertaining:

Shop Ahead

Unless it’s a last minute invite to have a few people over for a casual BBQ, try and have all shopping completed at least the day before, the bigger the party the more you should push this out the week before. And remember lists are your friend!

Make As Much Ahead of Time

Prep and make as many of the snacks/dishes ahead of time so all you have to do prior to guests arriving is heat and/or plate to serve.

The 80/20 Rule When Cleaning Your House Applies

I think we’ve all done it, start the house cleaning frenzy when we know guests are coming over. Typically most parties are contained to certain areas of our home- so focus on those! Now’s not the time to start scrubbing the grout or washing windows 5 hours before guests arrive. And remember, you’re going to need to clean up afterwards anyways so ask yourself where you can get 80% of the results for 20% effort.

Go with what you know

Unless it’s a “test kitchen” party, avoid trying new recipes or dishes that you’ve never made or tried before. Go with the standbys or your signature dishes that will make you feel comfortable when cooking and serving to guests. Also know the dietary restrictions of your guests so you can offer options. Never cooked gluten free before- the grocery store has lots of pre-made options, don’t be afraid to get them to help you out.

Create a Theme

I love a theme to a party. It helps define the food, beverages and even dress code. For my last birthday I wanted to host my girlfriends for a Mexican themed night. To reduce stress and anxiety I requested everyone bring one of their favorite Mexican dishes. I made a signature cocktail to reduce the workload at the bar as well. Plus it can be really entertaining if there are costumes to go with the theme.

Offer a Self-Serve Bar

In an area out of the way, put a self-serve bar together complete with ice, mix and a tub of chilled beverages (make sure to offer non-alcoholic options as well). I find this helps having to run around asking to refresh people’s drinks. If it’s extra busy you can ask someone to keep an eye on it to make sure it’s stocked.

And try to remember no matter what, just have fun! You will set the tone for the party and your guests so if you’re relaxed, all will follow suit!
