Last week we took a step out of the hustle and bustle of the city to start our hunting season. My priority for the last two years has been an elk but with the temperatures encroaching on 30 degrees Celsius, the elk were high in the timber and barely bugling. Nice weather for camping but unfortunately not hunting. Another goal was an archery goat hunt that G2 had been working on all summer. With the week still ahead of us we set out to search the mountain tops for a Billy.
The first few days were still unbearably hot without a breath of wind and unrelenting bugs. Still we found ourselves completing hikes starting in cut blocks with friendly 45 degree slopes that would finally surrender us to rolling alpine ledges with stunning, sweeping views. The territory was as I refer to “goaty splendor”, however with the formidable heat not a creature stirred in the beautiful cirques and alpine benches.
In the first three days we saw goats on four seperate occassions, but all the Billy’s were either on shear cliff’s sleeping or walking the ridgeline of a peak to beat the heat and bugs. So we wisely chose to conserve our energy and wait for the weather to cool. Stay tuned, more to follow on our wild adventure….
