Most of the time when you think about eating dinner around a campfire the thought of hotdogs, hamburgers and smores comes to mind. Camp cooking takes on another level if you are lucky enough to pitch your tent close to the Masterman’s fire pit. Chef Drew Masterman (Twitter@drewmasterman1) and wife Jen (Twitter@aviatrix30) set out to experience the Albertan Bad Lands and recall their, “luxury” camping experience:
“Drew and I made a run for it and escaped the city for a camping trip in beautiful Drumheller Alberta. We camped on the Red Deer River and dodged the heat with a full afternoon of swimming. However the main attraction for us was the Royal Tyrrell Museum, one of the largest paleontological museums in the world. We were like kids again learning about the history of the evolution of the earth during the period of the dinosaurs.
We also took advantage of the beautiful landscape and hiked the Horse Canyon and the Horsethief Canyon with stunning views of the Canadian Badlands. The trip would not be complete without a visit to the unique Hoodoo trail (Hoodoos are made of softer rock topped by harder, less easily eroded stone that protects each column from the elements). Hiking past the Hoodoos into the desert-like hills worked up a sizable appetite!
Back at camp, Drew cooked up some delicious camp fire dishes including a French Canadian toast with maple apple compote, gourmet BLT with a chipolte/dill aioli and smoked tomatoes with sweet potato hash and eggs. We cuddled by the fire enjoying smore’s. All in all it was the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of our city life”
