Vest (Winners) | Plaid Shirt | Distressed/Plaid Jeans | Boots
I love the idea of playing dress up at Halloween, but can’t stand the busy specialty stores, over priced costumes, or something that’s just plain uncomfortable or even worse- COLD. So in looking for a last minute costume I decided to take some inspiration from my favourite snap chat filter- yep that’s right the deer. The best part of this costume is I had everything I needed at home to make the ears and I was able to use my own makeup to create the look, which means no $$ spent and my skin isn’t suffering from being caked in bad costume makeup.
For the outfit, I decided a plaid on plaid look seemed to be suitable for a deer? And I was comfy and cozy the entire night out. As for hair, I think the BIGGER the better! Loose waves all the way, especially to cover up the headband for the ears.
For the headband you will need:
1- Plastic Headband that matches your hair colour
2-Bobby Pins
Thin Cardboard (I used an old granola bar box)
Hot Glue
Brown/ Cream Paint or Makeup to create detail
I used the following tutorial to determine size of the ears (about 5 inches from top to bottom), I then sprayed with a dark brown spray and let dry. Once dry I folded at the base and hot glued to create the fold of the ear and let dry…
Next the challenge was attaching to the head band. I used two bobby pins and hot glued (USE LOTS OF GLUE) to the headband. These will later act as supports when gluing the ears to the headband. Finally after the ears have cooled, glue them to the headband and bobby pins- make sure to reinforce with lots of glue so they are sturdy.
Finally I finished off the inside of the ear, feathering in some cream, gold and bronze paints to create more dimension to them.
Makeup Time
So the makeup was a bit of trial and error, I took much longer, just adding and moving highlighter or contour to get a more dramatic look. One of the easiest guidelines to follow when trying out any type of Halloween makeup:
- 1- Use a matte primer and foundation for a clean palate
- 2-Use a “white” cream highlight on the bridge of the nose, under the eyes and up to the middle of your forehead, apply this before contour or bronzers
- 3-Use dark bronzer or contour powders or creams to the top of the forehead, cheeks and on the side of the nose. Don’t be freaked out, the darker the better!
- 4- Apply a dark pencil to the brows and create the nose. I filled afterwards with a black shadow.
- 5- Add spots to the forehead and cheeks, use the lightest concealer you have or a wet a white shadow.
- 6-Set makeup with a setting spray
- 7-Apply false lashes if you want- otherwise pile on the mascara!
Use this tutorial here as a guideline, but let yourself be creative! Have fun and Happy Halloween!
