I have distinct memories of the last time I wore a fanny pack. It was Disney Land, circa 1992 and I was completely enamoured with one that resembled a giant watermelon slice. What I kept in that enormous pouch strapped to my hip? One could only surmise, Bonne Bell Lip-smackers? Gum? A wad of $$$ to see Mickey? Regardless, I had never felt cooler and it’s definitely one of my more risque fashion moves to-date.
However fast forward over a few decades and I ran into this little western number styled in the front window of American Eagle. I stopped, at first intrigued and then hit with waves of nostalgia and then optimism, that maybe- just maybe I would do the fanny pack differently time time around.
Ok, so the first rule of Fanny Pack Club- They are now referred to as “Belt Bags”- I guess that makes them sound more chic? Another trick- instead of slinging it across your hips, alternate and sling it over your shoulders like a cross-body bag for an updated look.
I’m more of a fan of the subdued look, belted through your jeans, it’s still functional and handsfree.Great for those days you’re on the go, or at a music festival- which I have no plans of attending in this decade so I’ll settle for a run to the grocery store. I wore this one to a market a few weeks ago and it was refreshing and somewhat relaxing not to have to juggle a purse on my shoulder or with one hand. So I say if there’s a trend you might want to try out this summer, give the fanny, err I mean Belt Bag a spin!
Western Belt Bag- American Eagle
Fanny pack or belt bag… whatever the name, they are very useful. I always carry one when I am vacationing. Can keep so many things in there.
