“I was in Ottawa a few days ago, the sun was shining and with an evening free, the crew decided to expand our cultural understanding and took in the Greek Festival. The highlight by far was the food as we sampled the full gamet, including spanakapitas (pastry with chopped spinach), dolmathes (grape leaves with a rice filling), baklava covered in chocolate, lamb gyros, loukoumades (doughnuts covered in honey) and saganaki (fried cheese).
A festival isn’t one without live music and our idiotic attempts to learn belly dancing. After we finished our spectacle we allowed the experts show us our short comings as the children from the Ottawa Greek community showcased in tradition dancing.
The festival was an adventure that took me beyond my comfort zone and it was really enjoyable. I encourage you to go out into your community to explore cultures outside your heritage as it promoted appreciation and understanding and is just plain fun!”
