Recently I’ve been exploring the great trails around the house. I’m lucky that I have the Rocky Mountains and wilderness right out my back door. It’s also a great way to unwind at the end of the day and attempt to wear out the fur monster (aka Gunnar). I’ve also become aware of trail safety and some potential hazards that you’ll find when you’re out hiking or running that I wouldn’t necessarily be cognizant of this time of year when strolling through the park in the city.
- Watch for Wildlife! The reality is there are bears, cougars and moose roaming around that are prepping for winter or potentially in the rut. I carry a can of bear spray with me and try and make some noise so that I don’t surprise anything that we might come across.
Be Visible, With the wildlife, the hunters are also out this time of year. We’ve come across a few hunters on our journeys. I love a bright top or jacket, so that they can see you coming and not mistake you for an animal.
Stay Alert- Running in the park with my music blasting is one thing, but out on the trails I make sure I unplug so I can stay alert and listen to what’s going on around. Plus it’s way more relaxing to just take nature in.
- It’s also important to use the buddy system and tell someone where you’re going and for how long, conditions can change quickly and it’s better to be safe than sorry!
