How to Spend 24 Hours in Banff

24 Hours in Banff

This year has been such a change from our normal routines with vacation being virtually non-existent for me, as for many. With travel restrictions still on, many Canadian’s explored their backyard this summer, but for me, a trip to the mountains in shoulder season is one of my favorite getaways’. Everything is quieter once the weather cools, yet it is still a beautiful time of year to check out the sights in the park and visit the town of Banff.

This year’s annual pilgrimage would be a bit different as I invited my mom along who had not been to Banff in almost 40 years. With a short window to take in the sights, I wanted to pick an experience that would let us see as much that Banff had to offer as possible.

Where to Stay- Mount Royal Hotel, In the Heart of Banff

Where to Stay in Banff

I wanted a hotel that had easy access to Banff Avenue, the Mount Royal Hotel is steps away from all the shops, restaurants, and nightlife around. The historical hotel has been completely renovated and has comfortable, modern rooms while still maintaining that historic Banff charm.

Outfitted with creature comforts like a minibar and Nespresso machine, I have to say I was most impressed with the high quality of the beds, linens, and pillows. My sleep was divine!

Our room featured a view of Banff Avenue and mountains in the background, and historic photos of the years and activities of the region decorated the walls of the room and halls of the hotel. If you haven’t been to Banff before, this is a great place alone to learn about its rich history.

While the Rooftop Terrace with hot-tub and fireplace lounge area weren’t open due to COVID restrictions, other amenities include the lobby with a cozy fireplace, meeting area, library, and business center. There is also a Tony Roma’s attached if you need to grab a meal or a glass of wine without setting foot outside.

Where to Eat- Farm & Fire, Cozy Wood-Fired Kitchen Craft

One of Banff’s newest eatery’s that launched in May 2020 is Farm & Fire. The restaurant feature’s wood-fired family-style dining. The food is delicious, you are going to want to try it all and the portions are huge! I recommend if going with a group to try and mix and match your choices to sample as much of the menu as possible.

The Solstice cocktail and Smoky Old Fashioned are also a must-try.

One thing to note, if you do not have time for a sit-down meal, Farm & Fire also offers a great take-out menu as well if you’d prefer to grab and go back to your room.

How to Tour the Sights- Pursuit Collection Adventures

If you are staying in the heart of Banff, it is great to stroll and experience the sights right on historic Banff Avenue.  I would highly recommend grabbing a coffee and walking across the bridge of the Bow River and take a tour of Cascade Gardens and the Banff Park Museum.

What to do in Banff

Other ways to immerse yourself in the iconic mountain scenery and history are some of the amazing options offered by the Pursuit Collection, including options such as a ride up the Banff Gondola, a cruise on Lake Minnewanka, or one of their newest attractions Open Top Touring.  Because of our quick 24 hour stay, we decided to try the Open Top Tour. This 90-minute tour takes you in a vintage-inspired open roof coach reminiscent of the 1930’s tours that would show guests the sights of Banff.

Full of great stories, gorgeous views, and fun music from the ’30s, and fluffy throw blankets, the open-top tour was a great way to experience a semi-private tour of Banff townsite and the surrounding area. The tour prices are very reasonable at $45/adult and $25/child and are great for any age group.
