Newly renovated lobby in the Kananaskis Lodge- Soon to be an Autograph Hotel
A few weekends ago we were invited to a sneak preview of the new Kananaskis Nordic Spa, situated in the Kananaskis Village that was originally built for the 1988 Olympics. In additional to the new spa, the Delta Kananaskis Lodge was transformed with a beautiful renovation and the best part, it’s pet friendly so Gunnar got the royal treatment and was able to test out the facility as well! The spa and the upcoming family water park have really turned this location into an inclusive stay throughout the seasons. In the summer there are two 18 hole golf courses re-opening next door, and in the winter Nakiska ski area is just steps away with stunning vista’s and just a quick 45 minute drive from the city.
The Spa
The spa boasts an impressive 50,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor space. Including Three Outdoor Pools (Hot, Warm, Cool), Main Lodge with Bistro, Steam Cabins and Sauna’s- Banya Sauna, Finnish Sauna, Alchemist and Eucalyptus Steam Cabin and Barrel Sauna’s. Phase 1 opened up March 2nd, available for use Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Massage and other services will start in June 2018. Check their hours and schedule here.
And since we got a sneak peek prior to the spa being open, I wasn’t able to take many photos but you can see more and follow along at Kananaskis Nordic Spa Instagram.
The Lodge
I remember staying at the Kananaskis Lodge years ago and from what my memory recalls, what a breath of fresh air walking into the newly renovated lobby. The space is bright and light, a mix of contemporary and rustic features to give it an upscale lodge feel. As you pass the crackling fireplace in the front lobby, the Black Tail Bar is a mix of luxurious Canadiana with fur throws and soft leather/plaid chairs. Vintage board games dot the tables in all the seating areas to add to the cozy feel.
The moment we arrived at the hotel, they helped us up to the room with the bags (yes how is it I have multiple bags for a 24 hr stay?) The rooms were decorated with the similar decor as the rest of the hotel and even had a little doggie dish for his lordship King Gunnar as well as a gorgeous mountain view.
From there it was a visit to the new spa facility which has the most amazing indoor/outdoor space that will be open during warmer weather months. After a brief refresh, it was off to try pizza and classic cocktails at the casual and family friendly Forte Restaurant. After nibbling on the delicious woodfire pizza and indulging in a Gimlet (or two), we wandered over to the Cedar Room, which is a more intimate, upscale restaurant within the hotel. We were indulged with the infamous 32 oz Tomahawk steak complete with a variety of sides served family style accompanied with local wines and spirits. And if that wasn’t enough, a huge dessert platter to complete the night. Well the only way to work off that type of meal? By hitting the outdoor spa and sauna’s of course.
And however late the night may have went, Gunnar consistently the early riser demanded we promptly head out on a walk at 6:30 am, which thank god for the Marketplace Cafe to ensure I was fully caffeinated before we strolled on the array of trails and paths around the Village and watched a gorgeous sunrise over the mountain range. The stay wouldn’t have been complete without having brunch at Forte with the delicious spread including personalized omelettes and homemade baked goods. Overall the level of service and facilities were outstanding and I’m excited we have this getaway right in our backyards now, I can’t wait to go back later this month!
