Summertime in Calgary can bring just as many challenges to hair styling and maintenance as the dry winters. To say I’m picky about what products I use and keep on standby would be an understatement. Caring for long locks can be a big job and one that changes constantly with summer travel and all those fun adventures and activities that we try and pack in as Canadians over just a few short months.
So I decided to share my short-list of products that don’t leave my side either when I’m camping, travelling or headed to the office this summer. The best part- they all come in travel ready sizes as well so you’re not packing giant sized products around in your bags!
I’m calling these guys the FAB FOUR this summer, from left to right we have the Sebastian Professional Shaper Hairspray, Kenneth Bernard Dry Clean Dry Shampoo, Biosilk Silk Therapy Lite, Caviar Anti-Aging Sheer Dry Shampoo.
First off, if you don’t have dry shampoo in your roster already- stop everything you’re doing and go buy some! But in all seriousness, dry shampoo in my opinion is critical in refreshing limp, sweaty hair mid day in the summer or to amp up your volume after a long day of travel. It is especially required if you are off camping and backpacking to help sustain your hair health. Since being in the sun and water during the summer can be seriously damaging to your hair, I try to reduce the amount I wash my hair and this means I need dry shampoo to get me through the week. I love the Dry Clean spray because it instantly absorbs oils to extend the life of your blowout without leaving powdery residue. I start off with this in the morning or before I’m headed out somewhere.
I also carry the Alterna Caviar Dry Shampoo in my purse to help reinforce braids or give my roots some extra oomph especially if I get sweaty and my hair goes limp around my face and the crown of my head. It leaves a little bit more residue but it also has killer hold especially on a hot, humid day. Styling tip- If you have fine hair like me- I will add some of this to the base of braids or a ponytail to add some grit and hold to the style- that way I can manipulate it easier and it seems to last longer!
I’m not sure if I’m the only one but split hairs seem to multiply quickly in the summer with all the use and abuse I seem to put my hair through. I always put in a leave in conditioner and have used Biosilk therapy for years- I especially like the Silk Therapy Lite formula for the summer months as it is ultra-lite but still gives my hair a smooth, shiny look without weighing it down and also adds some protection from the water and sun damage. Chatters also has some cute little travel packs that include a size that you can tote around in your purse or travel bag.
And last but certainly not least is a great lightweight hairspray. It’s an essential for me- whether you are working on fresh or 10 day camping hair- hairspray always helps your style. My absolute favourite this summer has been the Sebastian Shaper– It gives the most control with the least amount of residue and you can still brush it out and retain your style- this is especially important if you are trying to maintain or style soft, beach waves and not look overly done. Kenneth Bernard was my #1 hairspray pick many years running and this has replaced it all summer long!
