The Okanagan Valley in B.C. is a spectacular backdrop to some of the most popular wineries around. It’s always one of my “must do’s” to visit a vineyard or two and discover some new wines. For this trip I took in a long-time favourite, Gray Monk as well as the beautiful Arrowleaf Cellars and the contemporary cool Ex Nihilo. All wineries are on a southwestern facing slope overlooking Okanagan Lake, and the views are truly spectacular.

First stop was Gray Monk, where my family has loved their wines for over 25 years. My favourites have to be the Kerner and the Gewürztraminer, however I think I found another favourite this trip with the Seigerrebe. If you are headed to Gray Monk, make sure you have time to check out their Grapevine Restaurant. The food is delicious and the scenery on the open balcony spectacular.
Next up was Arrowleaf Cellars, a smaller vineyard just up the hill from Gray Monk. Known for their Bacchus white blend and Pinot Noir, I also fell in love with their Snow Tropics Vidal and Zweigelt. Arrowleaf has a romantic quaintness to their vineyard, as you walk out of the cozy tasting room, they have a beautiful picnic and garden area set up overlooking the vineyard and lake. Bring a picnic and find your favourite bottle in their cooler and settle in for fantastic time.

And last but certainly not least was a stop at the contemporary cool Ex Nihilo Vineyards (named after the sculpture depicting creation which means, out of nothing). The Mediterranean style vineyard designed by owner Jeff Harder features some amazing wines such as Night and Pinot Gris in their tasting room. Take a wander through the rest of the 8000 sq ft winery to check out some edgy pieces of art. Ex Nihilo also boasts a close relationship with the music community, hosting well-known artists and shows at the vineyard as well as partnering with the Rolling Stones to create a limited edition “Sympathy for the Devil” Icewine. Ex Nihilo is definitely a stop that I would recommend to anyone looking to round out their wine tour when in the Okanagan.
