Well it’s been over a month since the house in the woods renovation started and already it’s starting to look quite different. I fell in love with the vaulted ceilings with timber frame beams, the open concept with an amazing amount of windows and ton of storage. The layout was great and the bones solid, suffice to say it needed some updating though. The house was dated with dark paint colors and a plethora of golden oak and gold fixtures. I wanted to update the home cosmetically to embrace the backdrop and give more of a cozy lodge feel.
Although the main floor is open concept, the one corner of the kitchen seemed closed off with double doors, one heading to the pantry and the other to the mudroom. I decided to open things up, taking out both doors and changing the casings from thinner oak to a thicker rustic pine. Oh and also we painted to a soft neutral called Benjamin Moore- Fossil, from the dark navy blue it previously was…
My first idea was to find a antique screen door to give the pantry a unique look. Unfortunately finding an old door to fit the pantry opening was not an easy task. One of the other issues was that the puppy’s room is the mudroom. Not having a door here any longer was posing a problem, but I didn’t want to close this area off by having two doors. The solution seemed to be a sliding barn door that could be utilized on either side.
We found the rustic black door track kit at Home Hardware and then used 4 and 6″ pieces of the pine that had also been used on the baseboards and casings. After coming up with a design, we constructed the door and checked sizing before staining and attaching the tracks. I used Varathane Stain in Ipswich Pine.
And voila! I’ve now added some rustic charm to one corner of my kitchen, which helps set the tone for the kitchen Reno that will eventually be tackled.
The barn door looks beautiful, what a great idea. and still very unique!
Thanks so much Sara, I love when a DIY project works out!
