The list of reno items is still lengthy on the house. One of the first things of the year I wanted to tackle was the very small guest bedroom. While I wasn’t willing to downsize the bed for the sake of making the room feel bigger, there was other ways I needed to best make use of the space and hopefully my guests comfortable and not claustrophobic. To tackle this, some of the strategies I’m using:
- Choose a neutral palette to make the room feel brighter and bigger. At the moment, the room is a darker colour and the bedding is also dark, which makes it feel almost cavelike.
Find room for additional storage under the bed for additional linens and extra blankets or pillows. Try and add a corner storage closet or armoire for hanging clothes in if you don’t already have a closet in the room.
Since I’m sticking to having a queen sized bed it doesn’t give many options, but you can create the feeling of more space by the addition of bunk beds if you need to accommodate small children.
Another trick for creating more space on bedside tables, trunks or chairs is to add bedside lighting with wall sconces. Plus additional lighting will make a smaller room feel brighter and bigger and guests can cozy up and do some reading.
Mirrors can be a great add to enhance the room and give your guests a place to do their makeup or check their outfit.
It’s also great to take advantage of shelving units or wall storage for books or towels to make sure guests are extra comfy! I can’t wait to share how mine turns out with you!
And if you are planning reno’s this year or just looking for fresh inspiration the Calgary Renovation Show is on this weekend at the BMO Center from January 13-15th. There will be lots of local exhibitors as well as feature guests like Jillian Harris & Justin Pasutto, HGTV Canada’s Mike Holmes Jr. and Danielle Bryk, and Calgary’s top renovation and design experts to offer easy advice and inspiration on how to tackle your projects in 2017!
