Fly Time

Fly Fishing Castle River

One thing that was always on my bucket list was to learn how to fly fish. I had watched  A River Runs Through It, completely enthralled (no it wasn’t just Brad Pitt) and then last summer I found myself with some time on my hands. For anyone who wants to learn and is female, I suggest getting the basic gear- get some waders and boots that actually fit. It doesn’t make for a fun day when you are tromping around in borrowed waders hanging down to your knees and trying to cast in Ronald MacDonald’s shoes. Also learn how to tie on your own flies! It takes a little patience and maybe some sore fingers but at least you will be functional on the river. Once over the initial hurdle of getting down a basic cast, that’s when the magic happens. There is is something utterly serene about standing in a flowing river and casting. Few things I have done that I could compare it to besides perhaps yoga or surfing.  So why am I suggesting this in the dead of winter you ask? If anyone is interested in learning or are just curious with what fly fishing is about the Western Canadian Fly Fishing Expo is on Jan 28-30th at Spruce Meadows. They have seminars, casting clinics, gear and tonnes of information to check out. For any of the ladies going with me on our first annual trip this summer, you might want to get a head start!

Practicing switching up flies!
