Island Time

I haven’t been able to blog as of late since I was getting ready for some island time. We arrived in Maui yesterday and I would have posted had I not fallen asleep at 7:30 (the time difference was a bit of a party killer). We’re staying in a great neighbourhood in Kihei, complete with our own Bullmastiff named Koa and resident roosters that continue to crow throughout the night vs saving it for the break of dawn.

The benefit of going to bed like a senior citizen is you feel like waking up at 5 am which gives you lots of time for coffee and Baileys prior to grabbing your gear and heading out for a surf. The guys at the surf shop loaded up our boards and we went to check out the recommended spots, “Grandmas” or “Thousand Peaks”. It’s currently a full moon and high tide wasn’t happening until around 1:30, after a morning of flat swell, the locals started showing up at Thousand Peaks around noon. Feeling let down from the morning I decided to take a break and hang out with my book. A local guy, who I learned has been here since 1982, proceeded to show me the “perfect” spot to position myself to get the best part of the wave every time.

He shooed me back out and I proceeded to ride wave after wave in, he even would run down the beach and hand gesture if I was out of position, but I had a cheering squad every time I rode one in. Today was a great start to a week of waves…

I loved this scooter sitting outside of the surf shop
