Training Day

Cougar/Mountain Lion hunting with dogs can be and is a controversial topic. Depending on the area, regulatory bodies and the aim of the wildlife management unit, hunting with dogs can be a non-issue or on the flip side not open for discussion. With population growth and urban sprawl, we’re seeing increased interactions and the effects on some of the wildlife, which unfortunately can cause problems.

Right or wrong, hunting cougars with trained dogs can be an effective means to dealing with problem animals. I wanted to use this post to showcase some of the rigors a guide can go through to train his dogs to effectively track a cat. At one point the one pup is so excited he has to be retrieved from the tree. I’ve been out where the dogs have run on a track for hours and come up empty.

Do you use dogs to hunt cats yourself? We just adopted a young Bloodhound & are considering training her!!

Brandy

If we are hunting cats, yes we use dogs. Personally we don’t own them but friends do and we usually go help out when they are training new ones as well

Those pictures make my heart smile. We have a walker dog and a bluetick. We use them to coon hunt. Not many mountain lions here in Texas. We have had to climb trees to get our walker out. Those are some nice looking hounds!

Great pics! Looks like y’all had lots of fun. I grew up with hounds and have a huge appreciation for them. My dad hunted and showed coon hounds. Like Tracie said, not a lot of lions here in TX but they are great for coons and hogs!
